How Dental Insurance Works

In exchange for a low monthly premium, your dental insurance plan enables you to receive certain “discounts” on various services. Otherwise known as coverage, the exact amount you’re eligible for and which treatments your benefits can be applied to will depend on the details of your unique plan. This can make dental insurance confusing, but remember that our team is here to help!

What Is the Difference Between Dental & Medical Insurance?

Basically, medical insurance tends to provide more coverage for major treatments you might need. Many people find it reassuring to know that if they ever got a serious injury, they’ll only have to pay some (or none!) of the costs out of pocket.

Dental insurance, though, actually provides more coverage for preventive services, such as checkups and cleanings, X-rays, fluoride treatments, etc. Most plans cover 100% of the costs for two checkup and cleaning appointments per year! The idea is that by encouraging patients to receive regular care, both you and your dental insurance provider will ultimately save money by avoiding major oral problems altogether.

In-Network VS. Out-of-Network

If you have a PPO dental insurance plan, you’ll be eligible for different amounts of coverage based on whether you’re seeing an “in-network” dentist or an “out-of-network” dentist.

In-Network Coverage

In-network dentists have essentially negotiated with your dental insurance provider, enabling them to give you higher “discounts” on their services. Visiting a dentist that’s in-network means you’ll be eligible to receive the most amount of coverage offered by your plan. Our office is in-network with:

  • Aetna
  • Anthem
  • Careington Platinum
  • Cigna DPPO
  • Dental Network of America
  • Guardian
  • MetLife PDP Plus
  • Principal
  • Sunlife
  • UnitedHealthcare

Out-of-Network Coverage

Out-of-network dentists don’t have a contract with your dental insurance provider. As such, you might not receive the same amount of coverage as you would with an in-network dentist – though your plan will likely still cover some of your treatment costs.
